Climate Change refers to human activities affect on the worlds temperature. Unless you don’t believe scientists. The world does look flat and the sun appears to revolve around the earth.

But I came to a realization recently that was sparked by this email “scandal”. Since most of the press is based on the idea and not the content and it seemed impossible for people to actually buy into that.  A blip on the credibility of one model that doesn’t even show any evidence of Global Warming.

And then I realized what should have been obvious: People are scared and ashamed.  And afraid because they have to change the only way they know how to live. It’s hard for people to change. But we simply must and it’s not as scary as it sounds.

Don’t be scared, don’t be ashamed but take due responsibility. A far better world is possible.

That’s right!  Orange MuthaFugruckas!  There are tons of thing you can rhyme with orange for the purposes of music:

Porridge

Borin’

Snorin’

Door hinge (by extending the consonant sounds out with more syllables makes you clever)

Dalorean

Warm

Storm

Born

Norm

Gorge

Even going beyond these examples, the “g” sound at the end can be rhymed with similar sounds such as “sh” or “t”

The decision came abruptly and almost epiphanously as I grit my teeth to put up with Brian’s mouth running with his brain parked at the question mark that ended all his sentences.  I was going to West Bank, where I had stashed my gear with a buddy of Brian’s, to bring back to the hostel which we could afford after picking apples at an orchard all day.  I did some lucrative busking out front of the liquor store too.  What a great way to make money.   As I was leaving I joked, “Maybe I’ll just grab my stuff and take off.”  The idea was so appealing I barely considered any other course of action after the words left my mouth.  Carrying everything you own on your back is a lot like living on a house boat.  If you don’t like your neighbours you just pick up and leave.  It’s real freedom, not the kind of freedom you hear people up in arms about all the time.  Real freedom is not having a closet full of junk you hold onto because it might be useful someday.

But anyway, I walked to the last set of lights leaving West Bank, Kelowna and got a ride to the first turnoff in Peachland.  10 minute ride tops.  This guy wants to learn how to play the guitar.  Good for him (sorry I’m so cynical).

Greed is ugly

It makes me sick that enviro-dogooders like Gore want to hack into the profits of the oil companies and other “big time polluters”.  Oil is a limited resource and we need to strike while the irons hot.  The future of oil supplies is counting on oil that we can discover through new technologies for finding it.  But if there’s none to find we could be at peak oil now!!

This is the worst time to further tax the oil companies!  It doesn’t make any sense to switch to renewable electricity and electric vehicles while we still have oil.  One day we wont have any oil and then there will be lots of time to use these renewable sources (assuming the sunspot which is currently heating up our planet doesn’t continue in which case we are simply doomed and there’s nothing we can do about it)

Profits are what make our system work.  Companies need to grow to remain viable.  Imagine what it’s like for huge companies like oil companies have to grow constantly!  The more you make you have to make even more next year!  Lets not hamper their growth with “green” mumbo jumbo.  That’s just ugly.

VanCity, Baby

Hey everyone!!  I’m workin on a song called VanCity, Baby about my 47 Rides trip (soon you wont have to read all 47, you can just listen to the song!)

What I need from you is to be a part of this song by recording yourself yelling, singing, saying, whatever: Van City Baby.  Send me the audio file (wav or aiff prefered) and I’ll put it in my song!  I need enough voices so I can put it together to sound like a crowd so do a bunch of different voices if you like.  Whatever material you can give me would be great.

Here’s a good word that I’ve been hearing a lot lately so lets rhyme it.

.. suspiciousness

.. ridiculous

.. ambivalence

.. admits to it

.. and misses it

.. and this is it

.. magnificent

.. possesses us

.. is limitless

.. in listlessness

Notice how the rhymes don’t necessarily rhyme with each other.  This “shaping” of the rhyme can be very useful.  You can start with one word in a song that has, say, 4 lines in a row that rhyme, and shape the rhyme to be completely different by the end.  Example:

So Bush was bad and Obama’s the Antithesis

Left or right and still the media possesses us

Left to fight through propaganda increasingly scandalous

Til we forget the part about pursuit of happiness

So that’s kinda American themed and me being Canadian.  It’s not my fault The Daily Show is so great!

And maybe that’s also not the best example of “shaping” a rhyme but I think it’s pretty good for making it up on the spot.  And you can see the importance of rhyming loosely to say what you want to say.

These damned “no hitchiking. Pickup is illegal” signs!  So after a good long walk down the highway (away from the sign only to end up in front of another and have to continue)  we’re picked up in an unexpected spot where the shoulder is shy but apparently sufficient.

I’m getting tired of Brian telling everyone he’s been hitching with me since Kenora ON.  It screws up my stories and degrades my accomplishments but I guess it’s better for him than saying he just got out of jail.  We’re starting to get our stories straight but I don’t think we need to pitch it to anyone unless it comes up.

This guy that drove us to the skirts of Kelowna was real friendly and clean cut.  Still a long ways from town but it sure beats the side of the highway, in the middle of nowhere, beside a sign that says NO HITCHHIKING

I need to sleep for a week to really loathe being lazy

They say Mo’ Money Mo’ Problems.  But less money, definitely problems.

So I think we can surmise:  Money and problems are inextricably linked.

Humans, having evolved to be the greatest problem solvers on earth (and possibly ever to exist anywhere), are bound to one day solve this one.

So we had to leave Merritt because the guy that was generous enough to let us stay at his motel, Peter, lost his job.  I blame Brian.  It definitely wasn’t my fault ’cause I didn’t sleep in the motel that night.  I woke up in somebody’s backyard.  That’s when I lost my guitar.

The people whose yard it was were concerned for me having somewhere to sleep.  I dazily explained I was staying at the Double D Inn and made my way off their property.  I somehow found my way back to the DoubleD and slept about an hour before Peter came in and told us we had to go.  Apparently his boss was coming back into town and Brian had been knocking on peoples doors the night before.  Peter had two jobs and he lost both of them somehow, if that’s even possible.  Poor Peter.

So now I’m realizing I don’t have my guitar so we retrace our steps from the night before, if that’s even possible.  The bar we were at said I had it with me when they kicked us out.  Hopefully that’s a last call kind of kicking out but I’m afeared it wasn’t.  So now we’re looking for the house I woke up at when a van pulls up asking if I’m Trevor Porter.  I am and I’m reunited with my guitar to my extreme relief.

So today’s ride is a generalization of Merritt locals, Natives, fellow travelers and random friendlies, driving us to the fire camp and back.  But, yeah, the fires don’t need any more volunteers.  So here we are in Merritt with nowhere to stay and nowhere to go.  Both of us barely slept the night before and we’re exhausted.  We even went into the police station and asked if we could sleep in some cells.  Nope, we had to break the law.  We looked around for something illegal to do but everything was too much effort so we continued down the street out of town..
